Bone china
Half bone ash by weight — the strongest and most translucent of the domestic ceramics, and the one arrived at by accident while trying to copy something else.
Bone china is a triaxial ceramic like porcelain — a clay, a filler and a flux — with the difference that the filler is calcined bone rather than quartz, and that there is a great deal of it. The British standard sets the minimum at 30 per cent bone ash and good ware runs to about half, which makes bone the largest single ingredient.
What that buys is a combination nothing else in the domestic ceramics reaches. It is the strongest of them, the most translucent, and the whitest, and it can be made thinner than porcelain while surviving harder use. A bone china cup can be thin enough to see a hand through and still go through a commercial dishwasher for years, which is why hotel ware is made of it.
It is also the one body with a firing schedule that runs backwards, and that is not a quirk — it follows directly from what the bone ash does.
Why it behaves as it does
The bone ash is calcium phosphate, and in the fired body it reacts with the clay and flux to produce two crystalline phases — anorthite and beta-tricalcium phosphate — dispersed through a glass. Porcelain fires to mullite needles in a glass instead.
That difference in phase is where the properties come from. The bone china crystals have a refractive index close to the glass around them, so light passes through instead of scattering at every boundary, and the body is translucent at thicknesses where porcelain is not. The same phase assemblage carries load better, so it is stronger in flexure than porcelain despite having more glass in it.
The cost is that the fired body has a large glassy fraction and a narrow firing range. It softens and deforms not far above the temperature that matures it, which is why the biscuit firing is the hot one and the glaze firing the cool one: taking a matured bone china body back up to porcelain glazing temperature would slump it. Porcelain does the opposite, and the reversal is a direct consequence of the chemistry rather than a tradition.
History
It is a failure that turned out well. Europe spent the eighteenth century unable to reproduce Chinese hard-paste porcelain, and the English answer was soft-paste — glassy, weak, and prone to collapsing in the kiln. Josiah Spode the second standardised the addition of bone ash to that recipe around 1796 and turned an unreliable body into a robust one, and by the 1820s it was the English domestic standard.
So bone china is not an improvement on porcelain arrived at from porcelain. It is the endpoint of a different and less successful line of development, which overtook the thing it was imitating on strength and translucency without ever being the same material.
Stoke-on-Trent built an industry on it. The industry has largely gone — most bone china sold in Britain is now made elsewhere — and the body itself did not change.
How to identify it
Held to a strong light, bone china transmits it and a hand behind the piece is visible as a shadow; earthenware and stoneware transmit none, and hard-paste porcelain rather less at the same thickness.
The colour is the second tell. Bone china is a warm ivory white, and hard-paste porcelain a cooler blue-white — obvious when the two are side by side and hard to judge alone.
Struck with a fingernail it rings, and at a higher pitch and with a longer decay than porcelain, which is a genuine consequence of its stiffness and low porosity rather than a piece of shop lore.
'Fine china' on a backstamp means nothing at all. 'Bone china' is a controlled description and requires the bone ash to be there.
Environmental impact
The bone ash comes from cattle bone, a slaughterhouse by-product, which makes bone china an unusually direct case of a waste stream carrying a premium product — and also the reason it is not vegetarian, a fact the trade does not advertise and buyers are frequently surprised by.
The firing is the larger burden. Two firings, the first above 1,200 °C, in an industry whose kilns are mostly gas-fired, and the biscuit firing is the hot one — so bone china carries a higher energy cost per piece than earthenware and a broadly comparable one to porcelain.
Against that, it is the domestic ceramic with the longest service life, and a body that survives thirty years of a hotel dishwasher has amortised its firing over a great many meals.
