Jingdezhen

A thousand years of porcelain from one town, and the material Europe spent two centuries trying to reproduce.

A town in Jiangxi province that has made porcelain more or less continuously for over a thousand years. Its advantages were geological: local deposits of both kaolin and porcelain stone, the two components of a true porcelain body, together with wood for the kilns and a river to move the product.

The body fires to a white, translucent, vitrified ceramic that is impermeable without glaze — which no European ceramic achieved until the eighteenth century, and not for want of trying.

History

Imperial kilns from the Ming dynasty; blue-and-white porcelain, using cobalt imported from Persia, became one of the earliest globally traded manufactured goods and reached Europe, the Middle East and East Africa in quantity.

Europe's attempts to reproduce it produced soft-paste porcelain — a near-miss made from glass frit — for two centuries. Johann Friedrich Böttger achieved true hard-paste porcelain at Meissen in 1708 with a local kaolin, working under detention, and Saxony then guarded the formula as Venice had guarded its glass. The word kaolin comes from Gaoling, a hill near Jingdezhen.

Economic significance

It is the longest continuously operating materials industry with a single location and a single product anywhere on this site, and the clearest case of a material that could not be reverse-engineered from the object. Europe had abundant porcelain to examine and could not make it, because the answer was a raw material nobody knew to look for.
