Stibnite
Antimony sulfide, in soft steel-grey blades — the ore of antimony, and the kohl of the ancient world.
Stibnite forms long steel-grey blades with a bright metallic lustre, soft enough to mark paper and easily bent. It is the only significant ore of antimony, and antimony's principal modern use is as a flame retardant, generally working alongside a brominated compound.
It is also one of the oldest cosmetics. Ground stibnite is kohl, used around the eyes across the ancient Mediterranean and Near East, and the practice is documented well enough that the mineral's chemical symbol — Sb, from *stibium* — is a fossil of it.
How to identify it
Bladed or acicular crystals, lead-grey, metallic and very soft at hardness 2 — softer than a fingernail will suggest for something that looks so metallic. It melts in a candle flame, which is an old and unusually decisive field test.
