Indium
A soft metal nobody would notice, except that every touchscreen depends on it.
Indium tin oxide is transparent and conducts electricity, a combination almost nothing else manages at useful quality. Every liquid-crystal display and capacitive touchscreen has a layer of it, which is why a metal produced in tonnes rather than thousands of tonnes sits inside a billion devices.
It is recovered almost entirely as a by-product of zinc refining, so indium supply is set by zinc demand rather than by anything to do with displays. Substitutes have been sought for two decades with limited success.
Uses
Indium's dominant use is indium tin oxide, the transparent conductor coating almost every flat panel display and touchscreen. A material that conducts electricity while remaining transparent is rare, and no substitute has displaced it at scale.
Indium is also very soft and stays ductile at cryogenic temperatures, which makes it a gasket and seal material for vacuum and low-temperature equipment. Indium solders join surfaces that ordinary solder will not wet, and indium compounds appear in LEDs and thin-film solar cells.
