Murano

Glassmaking concentrated on one island, partly for fire safety and largely to stop the knowledge leaving.

An island in the Venetian lagoon to which the Republic moved its glass furnaces in 1291. The stated reason was fire — furnaces in a city of timber buildings — and the effect, intended or not, was to concentrate an industry and its secrets in one controllable place.

The technical achievement was real. Angelo Barovier's cristallo in the fifteenth century was a glass clear enough to be compared to rock crystal, made by purifying the soda ash and adding manganese to counteract the green of iron impurities. Lattimo, aventurine and millefiori techniques all developed here.

History

Murano glassmakers held privileges and were forbidden to leave: emigration was punishable, and there are documented cases of agents being sent after those who did. The protection worked for roughly two centuries before the techniques dispersed across Europe.

Venetian dominance ended with English lead glass in the seventeenth century and with Bohemian potash glass, both of which were better for the cut and engraved styles that came into fashion.

Economic significance

It is the earliest thorough attempt at industrial secrecy in materials, and it is instructive that it eventually failed by the movement of people rather than by anyone reverse-engineering the product. Materials knowledge in the period lived in hands rather than in documents, and it left when the hands did.
