Coalbrookdale
Where iron stopped being made from trees.
A gorge in Shropshire where Abraham Darby first smelted iron with coke in 1709. The significance is a constraint removed rather than a process improved: charcoal smelting tied iron production to the growth rate of woodland, and Britain was running short of forest. Coke uncoupled the two.
The local advantage was specific. Coalbrookdale's coal was low in sulfur, and sulfur is what ruins iron smelted with coal — which is why the technique worked here first and took decades to transfer.
History
Darby's coke iron from 1709 was suitable for casting long before it was suitable for forging, so its first market was pots and, later, cylinders for steam engines. Henry Cort's puddling process of 1784 is what made coke iron usable as wrought iron.
The Iron Bridge, cast at Coalbrookdale and erected in 1779, is the demonstration piece: the first large structure built of iron, with joints copied from carpentry because nobody yet knew how iron should be detailed. It stands.
Economic significance
The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and produces no iron. Its significance is entirely historical, and it is the place most directly identified with the Industrial Revolution's material foundation.
