Columbite

An iron manganese niobate — half of coltan, the source of the tantalum in every phone capacitor, and one of the clearest cases of a mineral becoming a conflict.

Ore

Columbite and tantalite are ends of one series, and the ore as mined is usually called coltan. Niobium and tantalum sit directly above and below one another in the periodic table, behave almost identically, and substitute freely in this structure — so the mineral does not separate them and neither does nature.

Separating them industrially is genuinely difficult for the same reason, and the pair are a standard example of chemically similar elements whose division needs solvent extraction rather than ordinary chemistry. Their uses diverge completely: niobium goes into steel and superconducting magnets, tantalum into the capacitors that make small electronics possible.

Economic significance

Tantalum capacitors store more charge per unit volume than the alternatives and tolerate heat well, which is why they are in phones, laptops and medical implants. There is no comfortable substitute at that size.

Much coltan is mined artisanally in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and revenues from it have financed armed groups. It is one of the four minerals named in conflict-minerals regulation, and the supply chains built to trace it are among the most scrutinised of any material.
