Bronze Age

The period defined by bronze as the principal material for tools and weapons, roughly 3300–1200 BCE in the Near East.

The Bronze Age is an archaeological period named directly for a material, which is unusual and revealing: the defining fact about the era, from the evidence available, is what people made things from.

It begins at different dates in different regions — around 3300 BCE in the Near East, considerably later elsewhere — and its end is marked in the eastern Mediterranean by a widespread collapse around 1200 BCE, after which iron became dominant.

Economic significance

Bronze required copper and tin, and the two rarely occur together. The resulting need for long-distance trade in tin created some of the earliest recorded international commercial networks, and made bronze-using societies structurally dependent on their maintenance.
