Rutile

The richest natural form of titanium dioxide — the preferred feed for titanium metal and white pigment, and scarce enough that most producers use ilmenite instead.

Ore Pigment

Rutile is titanium dioxide, and it has one of the highest refractive indices of any common mineral — higher than diamond. That is not a curiosity: it is exactly why titanium dioxide is the white pigment in most paint, paper, plastic and sunscreen. A particle that bends light strongly scatters it strongly, and scattering is what whiteness is.

As an ore, rutile is the richest natural titanium feed and therefore the one the chloride process prefers. It is also scarce, which is why most titanium in fact starts as ilmenite and is upgraded.

How to identify it

Rutile is reddish brown to black, with a brilliant adamantine lustre and a distinctly pale streak. Slender crystals are common, and they occur famously as golden needles enclosed in quartz — rutilated quartz, cut as a gemstone for the inclusions rather than despite them.

Extraction

Rutile is recovered from heavy mineral sands rather than from hard rock. Beach and dune deposits concentrate it along with ilmenite and zircon by the same wave and wind sorting that concentrates any dense grain, and the separation is physical — gravity, magnetic and electrostatic — before any chemistry begins.
