Neon

A noble gas whose only significant use is the one it is named for — glowing red in a tube — plus a quieter role in the lasers that print microchips.

Neon is the second-lightest noble gas and among the least reactive substances known: no stable neon compound has ever been made. It is present in the atmosphere in tiny proportion and is recovered as a by-product of liquefying air for oxygen and nitrogen, which makes its supply dependent on demand for other gases entirely.

Its fame rests on one property. Excited by an electric discharge, neon emits an intense orange-red that no phosphor or filter is needed to produce. Every other colour in what people call neon signage comes from a different gas or a coated tube; only the red is actually neon.

Uses

Neon signage is the visible use and the smaller one. The commercially critical application is the excimer laser used in photolithography — the machines that pattern silicon wafers rely on neon as the bulk gas in their laser cavities, and semiconductor manufacturing is sensitive to its supply in a way few outside the industry noticed until shortages made the news.

Liquid neon is also a cryogenic refrigerant with far greater cooling capacity per unit volume than liquid helium, used where that density matters more than reaching the very lowest temperatures.
