Helium

An inert gas that cannot be manufactured, is escaping the planet continuously, and is being spent on party balloons.

Helium is the second lightest element and the least reactive of all: it forms no stable compounds under ordinary conditions. It is the only element first identified somewhere other than Earth, found in the Sun's spectrum in 1868 and not isolated terrestrially for another twenty-seven years.

What makes it materially interesting is that it cannot be synthesised at any useful scale. Terrestrial helium is the accumulated product of radioactive decay over geological time, trapped in the same formations as natural gas. Once released it rises through the atmosphere and is lost to space permanently.

Economic significance

Helium is consumed irreversibly and cannot be substituted in its main technical uses — MRI magnet cooling, semiconductor manufacture, leak detection — because nothing else stays liquid near absolute zero or is small and inert enough to find a gap that other gases miss. Supply is concentrated in a handful of gas fields, which makes it one of the more genuinely scarce industrial materials.

Uses

Helium's value is almost entirely cryogenic and inert. Liquid helium is the only practical coolant for the superconducting magnets in MRI scanners and particle accelerators, because nothing else stays liquid close to absolute zero. Its inertness makes it the shield gas for arc welding reactive metals, and the leak-detection tracer of choice — a helium atom will find a gap that nothing else fits through.

Balloons are the use everyone knows and the one that matters least. Helium that escapes is gone from the planet for good.
